Khau Pha Pass (Mu Cang Chai) and Ham Rong Mountain (Sa Pa) are the two most famous paragliding “paradises” in the North of Vietnam Especially in the rice harvest season, both become dream destinations for those who want to see terraced fields from above. So which flight point should you choose? This article will analyze in detail the important factors to help you decide more easily.
Altitude & Flight Duration
The Khau Pha takeoff point in Mu Cang Chai is located halfway up the pass, about 1,200 meters above sea level, while the landing site is located at the bottom of the valley at an altitude of 800 meters — meaning a difference in elevation of only about 400 meters. If calculated on an “average” day with a descent rate of 1 meter per second, the flight will last about 400 seconds, or just over 6 minutes. Compared to many other flight points in the country, that is an average or somewhat modest duration.
In contrast, Ham Rong in Sa Pa is a record: the take-off point is 1,750 meters high — the highest above sea level in Vietnam — and the landing site in Muong Hoa valley is about 1,000 meters, a difference of about 750 meters. With the same average conditions, a flight in Sa Pa usually lasts about 750 seconds, more than 12 minutes. Of course, on sunny days with favorable air currents, both places can “slide” into the lift zone to extend the flight time; but when compared under the same conditions, Sa Pa offers overwhelming flight time and a feeling of flying high, which is much better.

Views & Scenery
Mu Cang Chai opens up before the eyes of the flyer a "bowl" of valleys, terraced fields spread out in soft streaks hugging the hillsides - it is a gentle, elegant beauty, very suitable for those who want to experience a close, peaceful natural space.
Sa Pa, on the other hand, offers a majestic view: the Muong Hoa valley stretches along the Hoang Lien Son range with the towering Phan Xi Pang peak, on the other side is the town and the rocky outcrops of Ham Rong. With moments of slow "falling" in the air looking down at the mountain range and the clouds, Sa Pa gives a feeling of being overwhelmed and somewhat "heart-stopping". So if you like the smoothness, Mu Cang Chai will be great; but if you want a "strong" feeling, Sa Pa will be the perfect choice for you.

Activities Beyond Paragliding
Mu Cang Chai still retains many of its original features: apart from paragliding, other tourist activities are not very diverse, accommodation and dining facilities are limited, and the cost in some places is sometimes high compared to the quality. Therefore, visitors here are often those who want to experience pure nature or backpackers.
Sa Pa is a major tourist hub, offering a wide range of hotels, restaurants, trekking tours, cloud hunting and many other entertainment options; shuttle services are also popular and prices in some ranges are considered reasonable compared to the quality. If you want to combine parasailing with a rich travel schedule, Sa Pa will give you more options to fill your days.

Convenience & Accessibility
A big advantage of Khau Pha airport is its location close to National Highway 32, with a relatively flat road from the landing site to the takeoff site and good road surface, so almost all types of vehicles can access it.
Ham Rong flight point is convenient in that it is close to town, only takes about 20 minutes to travel from the center, but the road has a small drawback in the last 300 meters that usually requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle, making it a bit inconvenient to move by yourself. However, units like FlySapa often support two-way transfers from hotels in town and Muong Hoa valley, solving most of this problem for guests.

Weather & “Parawaiting”
The Northwest is famous for its changeable weather; one day can experience many states of cloud, fog and rain. So when planning a flight in Khau Pha or Ham Rong, you should be prepared to postpone your flight if conditions are unsafe. Because the valley in Mu Cang Chai is wider and the altitude is lower, sometimes the flying conditions there are a little more pleasant than in Sa Pa, but in general, both can require “parawaiting” — waiting for the weather to clear up to fly safely.

Paragliding Prices
The price for a double flight to both destinations usually ranges from 2.2 to 2.5 million VND. This price is slightly higher than the lowland flight destinations due to the more difficult operating costs in the highlands, but is still cheaper than many places abroad (for example, in Europe, a double flight usually costs around 150 Euros).
During the rice harvest season, the price of a pair of rice in Mu Cang Chai is sometimes pushed up to over 3 million VND due to high demand.
In Sa Pa, many units have included pick-up service in the ticket, helping to reduce the actual cost for tourists; while Mu Cang Chai may charge extra for logistics if you need a private pick-up service.

Conclusion — Where should you fly?
If you are looking for a gentle experience, focusing on terraced fields and easy access, Mu Cang Chai is the right destination. If you want to fly higher, enjoy longer flights, majestic mountain views and combine many other tourist activities, Sa Pa is a stronger choice. Short summary: Sa Pa leads in altitude, flight duration and service diversity; Mu Cang Chai scores in pristine beauty, tranquility and easy access.
