One practical tip before you go: Sapa's businesses are known locally by their Vietnamese names. We've listed both. If you're taking a taxi or asking directions, show the driver the Vietnamese name - it will save you a lot of pointing.
Where to Eat
Sapa sits at 1,500 meters in a valley cold enough to farm salmon and sturgeon in mountain stream water, which is why fish you'd normally associate with Norway turn up on menus here. Add Hmong black chicken, free-roaming local pork, wild highland greens, and the Western comfort food that arrived with the trekking crowd, and you have one of the more interesting food towns in northern Vietnam. These thirteen restaurants cover most of it.
Chợ Tình Quán - "Love Market"

Named after Sapa's traditional Saturday-night love market, where young people from the surrounding villages once came to find a partner through song. The restaurant is built in the style of an ethnic stilt house, with glass walls and a long balcony looking straight down the Muong Hoa Valley over the terraced fields. It runs its own farm for the salmon and sturgeon, and the menu covers the full Northwest range - black chicken, local pork, wild vegetables, and a beef jerky salad people keep mentioning. Rated 4.9 on Tripadvisor and consistently in the town's top ten. Book ahead for a balcony table; that's what you're coming for.
The Old Town Restaurant

The place to go when you've had four days of hotpot and want a burger. Western menu, pizzas with a serious amount of topping, good steaks, and staff who've built a 4.9 Tripadvisor rating largely on being warm about it. Sapa's trekking crowd has kept this one busy since it opened.

If you want the real Northwest specialties without hedging, this is the address. Thắng cố - the horse-meat stew traditionally cooked in a vast pan at highland markets - is the house dish, alongside smoked horse, grilled free-range chicken, Hmong black chicken, stir-fried local pork, and baked salmon with cheese. Not a menu for the cautious, and that's rather the point.

Specialists in lợn mẹt - a whole spread of local pork served on a woven bamboo tray, roast meat, and offal together, meant to be shared. One tray feeds three or four people comfortably. Big, airy, rustic Northwest styling. Order rice and cải mèo (highland mustard greens) alongside; that's how it's eaten here.
Việt Dela Sapa - Restaurant & Coffee

Right in the middle of Cau May, Sapa's busiest restaurant street. Fresh chicken and fish, a well-regarded steak, and thắng cố for anyone who wants to try it in a setting that's a little gentler than a market stall. Warm room, good for a group. Food can take a while when it's full.

A few minutes from the Stone Church and the old market. European and Asian dishes side by side - grilled beef, mixed hotpot, salmon sashimi. Open 8am to 10pm, so it works for a late lunch after a morning flight. 4.6 stars.

Sturgeon and salmon are farmed in the cold streams around Sapa, done as hotpot, grilled, or raw. Central, on Fansipan Street, a short walk from the church. Straightforward specialist cooking.

Grill and hotpot on the edge of Mắt Ngọc lake, with a smokeless table system so you don't leave smelling of dinner. Local pork, chicken, beef, Sapa trout, and highland vegetables, plus the full run of grilled sides - sausages, eggplant, whole fish, and mashed potatoes. Open until midnight, which in Sapa counts as late. Big enough for groups, with parking.

Sapa Halal Kitchen

Sapa's halal option is run by Faizal, with regular guests from Malaysia, Indonesia, and elsewhere. The kitchen is set up properly for it. Genuinely useful to know about - halal food is difficult to find this far north in Vietnam, and most visitors who need it end up eating vegetarian by default.

Out in Ta Van, down in the Muong Hoa valley that most people trek through, with what regulars reckon is one of the best terrace views in the area - the river below, terraces stacked up the far slope. Coffee, cake, food, rooms if you want to stay, and a Hmong beeswax batik workshop where you draw patterns onto hemp cloth with molten wax before it goes into the indigo. The motifs aren't decoration for its own sake; they carry meanings around prosperity, protection, and the natural world. A good way to end a valley walk.
White Cloud Sapa Homestay & Coffee

Built into the mountainside in the center of town, facing the Muong Hoa valley and the Hoang Lien Son range - the balcony is the draw, particularly at sunrise or when the cloud rolls in below you. Egg coffee, coconut coffee, phở, and a calm that the rest of central Sapa doesn't offer. Rooms upstairs. Prices sit above the town average, and it slows down when busy.

Paragliding involves more uphill walking to the launch site than most people expect, and Sapa's other activities involve a lot of downhill. Halosa does Red Dao herbal baths - the medicinal-herb soak the Dao people have used for generations, brewed on site - plus foot and body massage, with mountain views from the treatment rooms. The Fansipan package combines the bath, a deep tissue massage, and a hair treatment. Pricier than the average Sapa massage shop, and reviewers say it earns it. Two doors from Chợ Tình Quán, so massage-then-dinner is an easy pairing.
Sapa Shooting Club - Bắn Súng Hà Sơn

The first proper sport shooting club in northwest Vietnam - live ammunition, a controlled range, trained instructors, and no prior experience needed. Packages start around 180,000 VND for twenty shots, and they film it for you. A few minutes' walk from the Stone Church and the night market. Not what most people have on their Sapa itinerary, which is exactly why it's worth an hour.

Getting Around
Tiến Vip Motorbike Rental

A motorbike is the best way to reach O Quy Ho Pass, Silver Waterfall, and the length of the Muong Hoa valley on your own schedule rather than a tour bus's. Three pickup points on Muong Hoa Street, all within a short walk of each other.
One serious warning, discount or not. To ride legally in Vietnam, you need a Vietnamese license or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Vietnam does not recognize the 1949 version - which is the one issued to drivers from the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan, among others. Riding without a recognized license voids your travel insurance. Sapa's mountain roads, in fog, are not where you want to discover that.

Guests describe it as a genuine retreat rather than a hotel with a garden - reviews average around 9.2, with the peace and the staff getting the most mentions. Roughly 1.5 km from the Fansipan cable car station.
Sapa Kitchen Art - Bếp Sapa

Hotel and restaurant in one, centrally located on Fansipan Street. The kitchen runs local Vietnamese cooking alongside a proper Western menu - steaks, burgers, bruschetta, spring rolls - and holds a 4.8 average across several hundred reviews. Convenient if you'd rather not go looking for dinner.
