Tam Đảo Paragliding Site Review

Tam Đảo has long been a familiar destination for people who love its cool climate and romantic photo spots, but for the paragliding community it is worth far more than that. This is one of the strongest, longest-established and most interesting flying sites in northern Vietnam - easy to access, with thermal quality approaching that of the Northwest, and right next to Hanoi.

The review below combines the real experiences of both passengers and solo pilots, to give you the most complete picture before you visit Tam Đảo.

1. The Take-Off - Right in Town, Unique and Safe

Tam Đảo's most distinctive feature is that the take-off sits right in the center of town. Visitors only need to walk a few minutes to reach it - no dedicated vehicle or trekking required. This is very rare among Vietnam's flying sites. The entire take-off is built on a man-made platform: the operations office sits below, and the launch surface above. The site meets the size standards set by state regulations, wide enough for both solo and tandem wings.

Although not as large as some natural launch areas, it is laid out methodically and is especially safe thanks to a system of protective netting around and beneath it. This ensures that even if a pilot or passenger slips at the edge, there is no danger.

The take-off sits at nearly 1,000 meters, with an 800–900 meter drop to the landing zone. Just flying straight out - without catching any thermal - easily gives a flight time of 15–20 minutes, among the longest of any commercial flying site in the country. Because it's right in town, the moment of launch opens up the whole panorama of Tam Đảo: pine forests, the "castle" buildings, the mist, and the layered ridges - a very "Tam Đảo" experience.

2. Getting There - the Easiest in Northern Vietnam

It's no exaggeration to call Tam Đảo the easiest flying site to reach in northern Vietnam. The road up the mountain is a wide, well-built two-lane highway with a moderate gradient. Any vehicle can make the climb - no 4x4 or experienced driver needed. Getting from Hanoi up to Tam Đảo is also extremely convenient thanks to the major expressways, clear roads, and little traffic.

In town there are always taxis, Grab and Xanh SM. The fare up the mountain is around 150,000–200,000 VND depending on timing, or you can call Dù Lượn Tam Đảo (Tam Đảo Paragliding) for a better supported rate. For solo pilots without a car, getting to Tam Đảo is no problem either: just join the local pilot community, and on any nice-weather day someone will be organizing a shared Hanoi–Tam Đảo trip.

3. The Landing Zone - Spacious and Flexible, but Follow Instructions

The landing area at Tam Đảo is very large with many options: rice-field plots, open yards, flat ground and so on. However, the rules can change from period to period depending on land use and local traffic. Last year you might have landed at the Square; this year it's different. So pilots and passengers must always follow the direct guidance of the operating company to land in the permitted spot.

4. Operations - Among the Most Professional

Among northern flying sites, Tam Đảo stands out for the meticulousness of its operational management. Solo pilots arriving here are all invited into the office for a full briefing: from the terrain map and wind-flow analysis to rotor zones and areas to avoid absolutely. The site owner personally goes over safe flight routes with each pilot, rather than just glossing over them.

Every pilot flying here is required to keep live tracking on throughout the flight. This lets the operations team follow the whole situation closely and be ready to help if anything unexpected happens. The feeling of "someone watching over you from the ground" makes the flight far more reassuring, especially for first-time visitors to Tam Đảo.

5. Flight Quality - Strong, Steady Thermals Almost Year-Round

Meteorologically, Tam Đảo is a very special case. It is the highest mountain range rising up out of the entire Red River Delta. This large difference in terrain creates a continuous, powerful chain of thermal triggers, comparable to Northwest sites like Tam Đường or Hàm Rồng (operated by FlySapa).

For experienced pilots, Tam Đảo really is a thermal paradise: large, strong, steady thermals in predictable locations. XC routes running along the ridge and looping back are entirely feasible. A recent example: FlySapa pilot A Phóng flew over 30 km on nothing more than an EN-A wing.

For newer pilots (under 50 hours), however, this is a place to be especially careful. Strong thermals also mean strong bubbles near the ground; if your handling reflexes aren't sharp yet, it's easy to get caught off guard. The best trick for flying far here is to always hug the ridge, where the triggers are strongest; routing around the outside from one mountain foot to the next also works, but it's harder going.

You can fly at Tam Đảo almost year-round. Although the take-off faces south, even on north-wind days the thermal force is strong enough to override the prevailing wind, so launching remains normal.

6. Tandem Flights - a Paradise For Visitors

Tam Đảo is one of the most beautiful and convenient places for tandem flying in northern Vietnam. The launch is right in town, the scenery is stunning, the flights are long, and the operating crew is highly professional. The company uses a team of veteran pilots with plenty of experience and does not use new pilots as some other sites do.
