What to Wear for Paragliding in Sapa (Season by Season)

The short answer: closed shoes, long trousers, and one more layer than you'd wear walking around Sapa town - ideally windproof.

That's it.

But since "one more layer" means something very different in January than in July, here's the season-by-season version, from people who stand on that take-off every day.

Sapa Paragliding what to wear

Why You Dress for the Sky, Not the Town

Our take-off sits at 1,750 meters on Ham Rong Mountain - already noticeably cooler than Sapa town. Then you add airflow: gliding through the air feels like standing in a steady breeze for 10–15 minutes.

The rule of thumb we give guests: whatever feels right in town, add one layer for the sky. You'll never regret a light jacket; you might regret a T-shirt.

The One Non-Negotiable: Closed Shoes

You'll run a few steps at take-off - that's your entire job description as a tandem passenger. So we need shoes that stay on your feet:

  • Perfect: sneakers, running shoes, light hiking shoes.

  • Fine: any lace-up or velcro closed shoe.

  • Nope: flip-flops, slides, heels, brand-new leather sandals you bought at the night market. This is honestly the only clothing item that can delay your flight - everything else we can work around.

Season

On the take-of

Wear this

Sep–Nov (golden season)

Mild, clear, the best flying weather of the year

T-shirt + light windbreaker, long trousers, sunglasses

Dec–Feb (winter)

Cold - can drop to 0°C on the coldest days, with occasional frost

Warm jacket, gloves, beanie that fits under a helmet, warm socks

Mar–May (spring)

Mild, changeable

Layers: T-shirt + fleece or windbreaker you can zip on/off

Jun–Aug (summer)

Warm below, still breezy up high

Light long sleeves or T-shirt + thin windproof layer, sunscreen

Fun insight: passengers are always surprised in the same direction. Nobody has ever landed and said, "I was too warm up there."

Small Stuff That Matters

  • Sunglasses: yes, ideally with a strap. The sun above the clouds is serious.

  • Phone: zipped pocket or it stays on the ground. A phone dropped from 700 meters becomes a very expensive gift to a rice field. (GoPro footage is included in your flight package, so you lose nothing by keeping it zipped.)

  • Long hair: tie it back - it goes under a helmet.

  • Scarves: tucked in or left behind. Anything that flaps, we'll ask you to secure.

  • Contact lenses: totally fine. Glasses too - the helmet is open-face.

What You Don't Need to Bring

Harness, helmet, and all flight equipment - that's ours, included in the package, checked three times before every launch. There's no dress code beyond "warm enough and shoes that stay on."

Come as you are; we've flown guests in everything from trekking gear to jeans and a T-shirt - one guest even brought her birthday cake up for the flight (her idea, and the photos were fantastic).
