What to Know Before Paragliding in Sapa: A Practical Pre-Flight Checklist

1 day ago
6 min read

Tandem paragliding is one of the most unusual ways to experience Sapa. From the air, you can see the Muong Hoa Valley, rice terraces, and the Hoang Lien Son mountains from a perspective that is impossible to get from a road or trekking trail.

You do not need previous flying experience, but a little preparation makes the day much easier.

From what to wear and what to eat to phone storage, pickup arrangements, and take-off instructions, this checklist covers the practical things worth sorting out before you head to the launch site.

Preparing for a tandem flight with Fly Sapa Paragliding

1. Check That You Meet the Basic Passenger Requirements

Tandem paragliding does not require special training or a high level of fitness, but passengers still need to meet some basic physical requirements.

Weight

Fly Sapa tandem flights are generally suitable for passengers weighing between 20 kg and 110 kg, with some flight options allowing up to approximately 120 kg.

If you are close to the upper limit, it is best to confirm with the team before booking because suitability can depend on the flight setup and conditions.

Health

Let the team know before flying if you have a significant medical condition that could affect the experience.

The activity may not be suitable for passengers with certain cardiovascular or blood-pressure conditions, during pregnancy, or when severe anxiety or another condition could make it difficult to follow the pilot's instructions.

If you are unsure, ask before booking rather than waiting until you reach the launch site.

Eat Normally Before You Fly

There is no need to fly on an empty stomach.

A light meal around one to two hours before departure is usually a better choice than either skipping food completely or eating a very heavy meal immediately beforehand.

If you are prone to motion sickness, avoid particularly oily or heavy food.

Drink water normally, but there is no need to over-hydrate just before traveling to the mountain.

Use the Restroom Before Going to the Launch Site

Facilities on the mountain are limited.

If you need a restroom, use the facilities at the Fly Sapa office before leaving Sapa town. This is especially worth remembering because the complete experience, including transport and preparation, takes longer than the flight itself.

2. Wear Clothes You Can Move In

You do not need specialist outdoor clothing for a standard tandem flight, but your outfit should allow you to walk and run comfortably.

Wear Trousers or Similar Practical Clothing

Choose comfortable clothes that do not restrict your movement.

Trousers with zipped pockets are particularly useful for small items such as a wallet or keys.

Avoid skirts or dresses because passengers need to move forward during take-off and may also need to take a few steps during landing.

Bring an Extra Layer

The Fly Sapa launch area is at around 1,750 meters above sea level.

Even when Sapa town feels comfortable, the combination of altitude and wind exposure can make the launch site and flight feel cooler.

A light jacket or extra layer is therefore useful even on days that do not initially feel cold.

Wear Secure Shoes

Closed shoes with good grip are the best option.

Trainers or light trekking shoes work well.

Avoid:

  • flip-flops;

  • loose sandals;

  • slippers;

  • shoes that are too large or poorly secured.

You need footwear that will stay firmly on your feet while moving during take-off and landing.

Sunglasses and Sunscreen

Mountain sunlight can be strong, especially on clear days.

Sunglasses and sunscreen are useful additions. If you wear prescription glasses, a retaining strap can help keep them secure.

3. Keep Your Luggage Small

You do not need much with you during the flight.

A small crossbody bag or another compact item is usually enough for essentials.

Large bags are inconvenient at the launch site and cannot normally travel with you during the flight.

It is also better not to leave anything urgently needed inside the mountain transfer vehicle. You will fly down faster than the vehicle can return by road, so your belongings may not arrive at the landing area at the same time as you.

4. Bring Identification and Make Space on Your Phone

Passport or ID

Bring an appropriate form of identification, such as your passport, if required for check-in and insurance paperwork.

If you are unsure what document you need, confirm this with the team before the day of your flight.

Leave Enough Phone Storage for Your Video

One practical detail that is easy to forget is phone storage.

Fly Sapa pilots use GoPro cameras during tandem flights, and footage can be transferred to your phone afterwards.

The original recommendation is to have around 10 GB of free space available.

That may sound excessive, but video files can be large. Clearing space beforehand is much easier than deleting photos and apps while standing at the landing area.

5. Keep Your Schedule Flexible Around the Weather

Paragliding is weather-dependent.

A reservation gives you a planned flight time, but it cannot guarantee that the atmosphere will cooperate at exactly that moment.

Wind, visibility, and other mountain conditions must be suitable before the pilot decides to launch.

If conditions are not appropriate, the flight may be delayed, moved to another time, or handled according to Fly Sapa's current cancellation and rescheduling policy.

You can book a paragliding flight in Sapa here, but it is a good idea to leave some flexibility in your itinerary rather than scheduling another time-critical activity immediately afterwards.

6. Be Ready for Sapa Traffic

Pickup is normally straightforward, but central Sapa can become congested on weekends and public holidays.

If the road around your hotel is particularly busy, the Fly Sapa team may suggest a nearby meeting point that is easier for the vehicle to reach.

Walking a short distance to a quieter street can sometimes save considerably more time than waiting in traffic.

If friends or relatives are coming with you but are not flying, tell the team in advance. That makes it easier to organize available transport and explain where they can wait or meet you.

7. What the Pilot Checks Before Take-Off

Passengers are not expected to inspect technical flying equipment themselves.

That is the pilot's responsibility.

Before launch, the pilot and support team check the equipment and passenger setup.

8. The Most Important Take-Off Rule: Keep Moving

Many first-time passengers imagine that paragliding involves jumping from a mountain.

It does not.

During a normal tandem launch, the pilot asks you to move forward as the wing inflates behind you.

The most important thing is:

keep moving until the pilot tells you otherwise.

Do not suddenly stop because you feel the wing pulling upward.

Do not try to jump.

Continue walking or running forward with the pilot and let the paraglider create the lift.

This is one of the few moments during the experience where the passenger's actions really matter.

9. Tell the Pilot What Kind of Flight You Want

Not everyone wants the same experience.

Some passengers want a quiet sightseeing flight where they can relax and look at the valley.

Others prefer something more dynamic.

Before take-off, tell the pilot what you are comfortable with.

You can say that you prefer:

  • a calm scenic flight;

  • more turns or a more dynamic experience, where appropriate;

  • time to focus on photos and video.

Any maneuvers depend on the pilot's judgment and the actual conditions during the flight.

The same applies if you are nervous about heights or motion sickness. It is better to mention this before take-off than to remain silent and hope the pilot guesses what you want.

Quick Sapa Paragliding Checklist

Before leaving for your flight, check that you have:

  • comfortable trousers or other practical clothing;

  • secure closed shoes;

  • a light jacket;

  • sunglasses and sunscreen if needed;

  • passport or required identification;

  • enough free phone storage for GoPro footage;

  • eaten a light meal;

  • used the restroom;

  • confirmed your pickup point;

  • told the team about any non-flying companions;

  • allowed some flexibility in case mountain weather changes.

Once you reach the launch site, the flying team handles the technical preparation.

Your main responsibilities are simply to listen to the pilot, keep moving during take-off and enjoy the view.
